Storm damage can affect virtually every part of your homes exterior. The damage done by hail or windstorms is particularly dangerous. It often cannot be seen from the ground. It takes a well trained eye to detect if, and to what extent, hail has damaged your home’s exterior.
The most common component damaged by hail is the roof system. When shingles have been exposed to hail, the damage does not always show immediately. If the roof shows outward damage, the remaining material will be “bruised” and affected to some degree.
This “bruising” will cause a premature ageing of the shingles over a period of time. With the asphalt exposed to the ultra violet rays of the sun, rain and snow, degradation of the top coating takes place loosening surrounding shingles. These will wash off, therefore causing an accelerated and premature ageing of the shingle. Shingles damaged by hail are not covered by manufacturer’s warranties.
In Summary
If your shingles, gutters, or siding have been visibly damaged or bruised by hail, the integrity and quality of your exterior has been compromised and the lifetime of your materials shortened. Hence, your insurance company should compensate you for exterior restoration.
